Strategic Interventions — Revisited
Strategic techniques historically have had a theatrical or provocative quality. As therapists we value the collaborative nature of our work with clients. In our work we believe we have found ways to utilize many of these techniques in a fashion consistent with collaborative, respectful client relationships. This workshop will offer active strategies in a manner that is consistent with these values. We will identify strategies that help clients to incorporate hope, playfulness and humor into unpleasant situations. We will include strategies which address issues such as focusing intensity, detouring around stuck conflicts or defensiveness, helping heal trauma or pain, and providing relief to specific problems. Our goal is to offer participants new and interesting therapeutic strategies as well as ways to categorize active strategies. Strategies will include:
• playful ordeals
• restraint from change
• prescribing the symptom
• putting children in charge of parents
